A snappy comeback! I actually wrote this post awhile back as a nostalgic memory for Kickin’ It Old School, but hey, it never gets old. It’s a classic; Yo mama is a snappy comeback appropriate for just about any situation. Wouldn’t you agree?

This actually happened almost a year ago, but it still cracks me up whenever I think about it.

We were at the W Hotel in Buckhead having a fancy dinner with our kids to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. In the course of normal dinner conversation my husband picked up his wine glass, smelled it, and decided that it smelled too dusty for him and asked for another glass. Now, I had been married to this man for 15 years at that point and had never seen him smell a glass before, but apparently he says that he does it all the time because dusty glasses are a pet peeve of his. I started making fun of him because I really think my husband is going to be a crazy old man; I mean some of his current behaviors point in that direction. I had the kids cracking up by painting a verbal picture of their dad sitting in a corner rocking chair smelling glasses, rocking madly and mumbling to himself.

My husband was not amused and just said, “Yo momma.”

Actually he frequently using this comeback to me when he can’t think of anything else to say and even says it to my son. My son responds with, “You know, you’re talking about your wife and she’s standing right there.”

Well, that night I had a comeback of my own. Out of the depths of my memory bank I pulled out a little ditty that I hadn’t said since I was about 9 years old living on the South Side of Chicago and recited it to my husband with requisite finger wagging and facial attitude.

Yo Momma,

Yo Daddy,

Yo greasy Granny,

Got a hole in her panties,

Got a big behind like Frankenstein,

Going beep-beep-beep down Sesame Street!

And then I started laughing uncontrollably.

My kids stared at me in shock and my husband tried to quiet me down, concerned about the other diners, but it took a long time for me to settle back into a Buckhead-like decorum. It was fun to throw my playground swagger around….I still got it!

Have you ever…jumped out of bed and put on your exercise clothes only to get so distracted by the demands of the household that you realize 2 hours later that exercise is not going to happen today?

Have you ever…decided instead to go to the grocery store because there’s no milk and bread and Lord knows that even if you have a pantry full of food no one can exist without milk and bread?

Have you ever…grumbled that if your husband would have just picked up some milk and bread 2 days ago like you asked then you could be exercising instead of going to the grocery store?

Have you ever….noticed that your dog did get bit after all when the neighbor dog attacked him yesterday and that you can’t go to the grocery store, but instead now you must google “dog bites dog” to determine if the bite is worth a trip to the ER or can it wait until tomorrow when the vet is not closed for Memorial Day?

Have you ever….googled “dog bites dog” and got concerned and then called the ER for confirmation and they said, yes, bring him in right away?

Have you ever….arrived home from the pet ER shaken, but relieved that the bite wasn’t too serious and that you had a credit from another emergency and it didn’t cost the arm and leg that you were prepared to pay, so now you are leaving for the grocery store again, but check your email and see that your iPad is waiting for pick-up at the Apple Store?

Have you ever…rushed to the Apple Store with baby girl in tow to pick up your iPad, only to walk in with 10 other people who got the same email and must live the same distance from the mall as you because now you must wait for a very long time?

Have you ever…stood in line at Panera Bread downstairs from the Apple Store–iPad finally in hand–ordering lunch for you and Girly, planning to head straight to the grocery store as soon as you eat, when your cell phone rings and your son is ready to be picked up from orchestra rehearsal now, an hour early?

Have you ever…ordered your lunch to go instead, rushed to retrieve The Boy from rehearsal, drive past the grocery store, drop the kids off and finally, FINALLY make it to the grocery store?

Have you ever had a Memorial Day like that? I hope that I never do again.

Towards the end the school year, my son’s high school classes shift from the normal biology and math requirements to more interesting electives like The Sociological History of Hair.

I saw this book on the table tonight and thought, “huh; how about that?”

I’m hoping that the classroom discussion spills over into our dinnertime table talk. Especially since my son’s hair resembles the cover of the book in dreadlocks and it’s certain that 99.9% of the class does not.

If they had classes like this when I was in high school, I might have paid attention.

My kids’ school is very Green: they recycle, compost, organize environmental clean-ups and recently built a LEED addition to the school. There is a parent-run Green Team that is serious about making the school have as little impact on the earth as possible. I am always in awe when I hear that the school-wide Thanksgiving Feast produces a single tiny bag of trash. All the food scrap food is composted and the containers recycled. The dishes and forks used are made of corn. It’s amazing that they can feed over 900 kids at a traditionally glutenous meal and not have any trash!

So, practicing Green habits is a daily occurrence at the school, not just something that they do on Earth Day. But once a year they ask the parents and students to do something that they might not normally do: walk, carpool or ride bikes to school. There are meet-up points near and far for walkers and bike riders to travel to school together, so it’s fun. We don’t normally walk to school; it’s a 6 minute drive, but a 40 minute walk. The walk is not so long, but it would require getting up early (!) and moving quickly in the morning and we don’t do that very well. But today we got up at 6:30 and met the science teacher at the corner at 7:15 to walk as a group. It was chilly outside, but fun walking and talking together.

We were able to do it because we didn’t eat breakfast before leaving home. We knew that this would be waiting for us:

HAPPY EARTH DAY!

Right now, for just a few short glorious weeks I have a longer than usual day without kids or puppy and all the responsibility that goes with that, so I’m using that day as “me time.” I drop the puppy off at daycare (yes, he goes to daycare; don’t judge me), come home to exercise and then I have a whole 6 hours to myself. Sometimes I get my hair done or a pedicure or go shopping. I even have enough time to see an early movie and yesterday that’s just what I did.

Monday – Thursday Fork & Screen AMC has $6 movies. If you have never been to this theater in Atlanta, you must try it. Or I’m sure that there are similar theaters where you live as well. The seats are very comfortable, the theater is small and best of all, you can eat a meal while you watch the movie. I had a very good chicken quesadilla, but passed on the alcoholic drink. I was surprised to see that there were at least 14 other people in the movie with me (and they were drinking too). Who goes to the movies on a Tuesday at noon and orders a Cosmopolitan? Apparently many people.

I saw Death At A Funeral.

I was excited to see this movie because of the cast: Loretta Devine, Chris Rock, and Danny Glover among other talented and funny actors. I purposely did not watch any trailers or interviews on morning talk shows because I didn’t want to be tainted. I wish now that I had known what I was getting into because I wouldn’t have gone to see the movie. I did not know that it was a remake of the 2007 British movie of the same time. I saw that movie and liked it. But I did not need to see THE EXACT SAME MOVIE three years later.

The new Death At A Funeral is EXACTLY the same as the original. EXACTLY. Except for the African American cast and references to American culture. And they changed the funeral food to potato salad and macaroni and cheese. Other than that, EXACTLY the same. One of the actors, Peter Dinklage, even has the same role in both movies.

I suppose if you hadn’t seen the original movie a mere three years prior than you might think that this movie was hilarious. Except for Chris Rock; he was wooden and emotionless. I know that he was playing the straight man, but dude, did you have Botox before the shoot? Can you move your face to express some emotion? Martin Lawrence was Martin Lawrence–not that funny, but not horrible, just played; I’ve seen him act like that so many times. Luke Wilson’s character was totally off and if I hadn’t seen the original movie then I would have been confused to why he was even there. James Marsden played the part of the drugged boyfriend perfectly; I enjoyed him. And while I am not a big fan of Tracy Morgan, surprisingly he was my favorite in this movie. He was funny, spot on and didn’t overact. The scene in the bathroom–which almost made me throw up, even though I knew what was coming–was the funniest scene in the movie. I really can’t tell y0u much more than that without spoiling the movie. The hilarity of the movie is in the surprises and exposure of family secrets.

If you haven’t seen the original movie, then perhaps you will like Death At A Funeral. It’s a family comedy (meaning, that it’s about a family–not that you can take your family to see it because the language is about as bad as it can get) and mostly funny. Also, some people, like my husband, don’t “get” british humor and would better appreciate the American version.

But, if you have seen the original movie and liked it, then don’t bother seeing this one. It is almost EXACTLY the same script. And really, who needs to see that bathroom scene again?

My friend Renee likes to play this game, “tripping or not tripping;” she tells me what happened and asks if the offending party was out of line (tripping) or not.

So let’s play: Tripping or Not Tripping?

Picture this: I am at a school function chatting with my husband and two male parents/friends–let’s call them Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.

I say to my husband, “Can you give me a ride? It’s too hot to walk back home.”

And Tweedle Dum says, “Oh don’t be a _____.”

(Think: a vulgar word that juvenile guys use for “wimp” that is also a name for a cat.)

Get it?

Now, I didn’t hear this. But my husband (foolishly, in my opinion) said, “Did you hear what he called you?” And repeated it.

Say what?

Tweedle Dum must have been loopy from the heat or something because

I. Don’t. Play. That.

But I was very close to other parents and children. I couldn’t do what I wanted to do…..which was to read him up and down, inside and out.

And when I get going, there is no off button. It would have been UGLY, right there in front of the whole school.

So, against my nature, I did nothing.

And I’m still mad.

My verdict: HE WAS TRIPPING.

So tell me what you think: Tripping or Not Tripping? What would have you done in that situation? Cuss him out or let it ride?

I was not aware that we moved the Christmas Season to start the day after Halloween, but apparently that is the case, so “Merry Halloween” everyone. I went to Target early on November 1st to check out the left-over Halloween costumes on sale, but instead I was greeted with snowflakes falling from the ceiling and aisles full of Christmas items. I hear Santa is already in the malls too. I refuse to be a pawn in the retail establishment’s game! I will not listen to one note of Christmas music or hang one sprig of mistletoe until after Thanksgiving! Except…I was at Target last night and passed by the Christmas aisles where I saw A FULLY ASSEMBLED GINGERBREAD HOUSE and I just had to get it.

For those of you who decorate gingerbread houses each year, you understand. And for those of you who go all Martha Stewart-like and bake your own house pieces and make your own icing and then expertly put the whole thing together….I bow down; I’m not worthy. For the rest of us, the fun is in the decorating…the frustration is in “gluing” the house pieces together with icing, without it falling down or the roof sliding off. And then waiting for it to dry while your previously eager kid has now moved on to another project. About 3 years ago I discovered the beauty of using a fully assembled house, but unfortunately couldn’t find one again until now. So, even though I loathe this whole Merry Halloween sham, I just had to buy the gingerbread house. I suggest that you do the same.

If I ever moved to Sesame Street, Grover would make a great roommate. I think Grover and I would get along great because he’s wacky and fun-loving, but also very sweet.

I really could be stranded on a desert island with my purse and be alright. Everything I need is in there!

iPhone
I can’t live without it. I rarely use the phone, but check my email, Facebook and Twitter often. And play Cooking Dash in the carpool line.

Juicy Couture Sunglasses
I’m really a vampire and hate sunlight.

4 Kinds of Lipgloss
Lips look better with a light shine.

Altoids, Dental Picks & a Tiny Disposable Toothbrush
For other people. When I point to their mouth and say “You need to take care of that”, I offer a solution.

Motrin, Tums & Band-aids
Someone in my family is ailing at any given time.

Hand Sanitizer & Kleenx
Germs!

Wipes: Shout & Wet Ones
Again for the family; they are messy.

Flip Cam
My son once had the funniest reaction to laughing gas at the dentist and I didn’t have my Flip, so I couldn’t record it; I never want to miss a show like that again.

25 “Frequent User” Store Cards
For eventual discounts, but I wish the retail world would come up with a better system; what a pain to carry these around.

An Extra Pair of Contacts
Just in case.

A Sharpie
You’d be surprised how much I use this or loan to others who need to permanently mark something.

3 Ritz-Carlton Pens
They are slim and write well.

A Hello Kitty Notepad
Despite the “Notes” feature on my iPhone, I like jotting down notes on real paper. And Hello Kitty is just cute.

Wallet
I get tons of compliments on my Betsey Johnson wallet; it’s very Rocker-Chick stylish. Of course it carries my money, but also driver’s license, insurance cards, Chili Dawg’s i.d., business cards (Funkidivagirl, Lovable Labels and Mommy), insurance cards, library card, and membership cards (Zoo Atlanta & High Museum). I also have a Blockbuster card, but that is a dying business and I never use it.

Twizzler Nibs
Shhh…don’t tell my daughter.

Leading up to Independence Day this week, my daughter was anticipating a full day spent at my parents’ house swimming and fireworks later in the evening. But yesterday she asked me, “What is Independence Day and why do we celebrate?” Instead of giving her a boring and confusing American History 101 lecture, I just popped in my trusty Schoolhouse Rock dvd and played videos from the America Rock series. During the election of President Obama I blogged about other Schoolhouse Rock videos and how this incredible series helped me to retain my knowledge of complex and potentially boring subjects. By watching Fireworks, she was able to understand the foundation of American History and the cause of our celebration on July 4th in a catchy and easy-to-understand way.

Call me a food snob, crunchy or crazy but I care about what I put in my body and that of family. Whenever possible we eat organic fruit and vegetables, free-range/hormone free meat and I try to limit dyes, additives and refined food as much as possible. But of course it is not always possible and just like everyone else sometimes we eat fast food–but only Chik-fil-A and NEVER McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell or anyplace else. Today I broke that rule and was reminded to never do it again.

We were coming home from a day of hanging in the sun and needed to quickly grab dinner. Someone suggested that we try Kentucky Fried Chicken’s new grilled chicken; not a place that I frequent often (I think I last ate there about 6 years ago), but I was intrigued by all the latest media hype. Our nearest KFC is not in our neighborhood, but in the hood. And here’s the first bad news: they didn’t sell the grilled chicken because the store has yet to have the necessary renovations. What do you want to bet that the KFC’s in the burbs are first on the list for renovations? Because I’m sure that KFC thinks that people in the hood don’t care about eating healthy anyway. It’s just another ploy by the man to keep the disenfranchised pumped full of fat and grease and therefore not energetic enough to stage a revolution!

Anyway, by now we were really hungry so we ordered a bucket of original recipe chicken, mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese. I admit that the chicken was good (I tried not to think about the hormones), but the macaroni and cheese was not even edible. Not only did it taste disgusting, it was a neon florescent orange that I have never seen in the natural world. My daughter took a look and said, “Wow, that looks like it has lots of dye in it!”

The photo doesn’t even do it justice; it is the color of a crossing guard’s vest.

Kentucky Fried Chicken, if you ever read this, please know that I am OFFENDED by the nasty slop that you are trying to pass off as macaroni and cheese. You ought to be ashamed! I know that you are trying to provide an economic meal, but can you PRETEND to serve quality food? How can you advertise grilled chicken–a supposed healthy alternative to fried–but yet continue to sell a side item as unhealthy as that couldn’t-possibly-be-real-cheese crap? My daughter said, “It looked fake and tasted like someone didn’t care about their customers.”

Yes, baby, that’s exactly right.

Someone tweeted that the next season of The Real Housewives on Bravo will take place in Washington D.C. I have watched, in bits and pieces, the O.C., Atlanta, New York and now New Jersey housewives. Here’s my thing: I have a problem with a show calling itself “houseWIVES” when some of them aren’t even married. Bethany is the most likable woman on the NYC show, but she has a DOG; how is she a housewife? By association? And how come there aren’t any wives of color on the shows, except for in Atlanta when it was all brown girls, except for Kim? Can we at least get a token brown chick? I know for a fact that there are housewives of color in New York and New Jersey because I was one of them. I’m a 4 Real Housewife; you can read my story and others like me here.

Jon & Kate Plus 8

My daughter enjoys watching this show, but I don’t know about letting her watch it now. Depending on what’s going to happen with Kate & Jon, I don’t want to have to explain to her the reason behind the new family dynamics. I watched the last episode when Jon and Kate talked about their current struggles and it’s really sad to watch what they are going through. I can only imagine how difficult it is to have your public life on display for so many years and I understand Jon’s frustration, but he’s really a PUNK. I believe him when he says that he didn’t cheat on Kate, but he’s also not acting like a responsible husband either. If he’s really that unhappy with their current situation then he needs to man up, talk to Kate and figure out their next move as a family, together.

My two cents; as if you asked.

It’s cold today in Atlanta. It’s May 19th! What is this? I didn’t even know how to dress today because I felt foolish wearing winter-type clothes, but it was too cool to wear a short-sleeved shirt. One of my Lucky Brand hoodies zipped all the way up fit the temperature.

********************

I got up at 6:00 a.m. (which is sooooo early for me) because my husband was catching a flight and making tons of noise, even though I know he was trying to be quiet. It’s my first time solo with the dog and kids for the morning routine and of course the dog pooped under the kitchen table. Sigh. Still, I managed to get the kids and dog taken care of as well as exercise when I really wanted to go back to bed.

After showering I checked email, Twitter, Facebook and find an Army website to buy my son camouflage pants and tee shirt for a musical performance costume. They are doing Suessical for the Jr. High musical this year. Don’t ask me how Army clothes fit into the plot. I also need to find black disco-type bell bottom pants. That should be easy (not).

Next a quick stop at Target for random stuff (a trash can lid–yes, just the lid, toothbrush, headphones, orange juice, apple juice and La Croix, which my son drinks by the six pack) and off to lunch with my friends at Sabroso. It was great food as well as great conversation; five women…you know we talked non-stop!

I’m back to the early baby days of watching the clock when I’m out because I have to get back to Chili Dawg, who can’t be in his crate for too long, so it was a quick lunch.

**********************

Speaking of Chili Dawg, this is his new spot to take a nap, under the window. Look at the whoop-ti-do curl of fur he has on his head; it looks like he rolled his hair. It’s too cute!

********************

So, I had been searching forever for a jewelry box to match my newly re-decorated bedroom and had given up hope because most were too big or just not the right style . But while shopping with my Girly on Sunday at Nordstrom , I found this jewelry box (or course, when I wasn’t looking). It’s the perfect size and the right color to compliment the colors in my bedroom.

It’s 2:00 p.m. on a total random Tuesday. What are you doing?
