I’ve reposted this blog post since 2008 and every year I get some interesting responses. I would love to hear yours. The question of the day is:

SANTA CLAUS: DO YOU OR DON’T YOU?

Look at this man; does he give you a warm feeling inside or make you want to spit on the ground in disgust? The question of the hour is: Santa Claus-do you or don’t you?

I had a magical memory of Santa Claus that stayed with me until just a few years ago. Long ago when I was a little girl and sleeping on Christmas Eve, I heard a noise in my living room. I jumped out of bed and peeked in my parents’ room; they were asleep. Then I looked in the living room and sure enough, there was a figure of a man putting something under the tree. Well, since I didn’t want Santa to sprinkle pepper in my eyes, I ran back to my bed and stayed in there the rest of the night. In the morning there were presents under the tree as usual, but I had a secret–I had actually seen Santa Claus! Even when I grew up and stopped believing in Santa, there was always a part of me that remembered that night and said “but still….there was someone in the living room.” I never discussed that night with my parents until recently and I wished that I hadn’t; my mother told me that it was my Uncle Robert putting my gift under the tree. Of course, that makes sense as there had to be some logical explanation. But it was nice to have that magical memory all these years; to just simply believe.

I don’t remember when I stopped believing or how. I don’t think it was anything dramatic; I just sort of gradually grew out of it. There was no drama involved–unlike my son’s revelation. He was 8 years old when he asked me point blank if there was a Santa Claus. I looked at him to gauge if he really wanted to know and he asked again straight-up, “Mommy, tell the truth; is there a Santa Claus?” What else could I say when he asked like that? I was less nervous telling him where babies come from! I took a deep breath and told him the truth. And then he burst into tears.

Months later when Christmas had come and gone and we had a rare moment alone with our son, my husband and I asked him about his reaction to my “confession.” He then proceeded to rage about how we had lied to him, betrayed him and how he could never trust us again. Wow; my husband and I were shocked! Neither one of us had ever felt “betrayed” by our parents about Santa, but now that I have talked to others, I have learned that his reaction is not uncommon. I have several friends who felt betrayed like our son and consequently do not introduce Santa Claus to their children. Other friends feel that Santa Claus dilutes the true meaning of Christmas and therefore do not make Santa a part of their Christmas celebration.

While I can appreciate the logic of my friends and honor my son’s feelings, Santa still visits our house every year. To me, believing in Santa Claus is like going to Disney World; yeah, the rides are fun, but I go to see The Mouse. Without him and the Disney “magic”, it’s just another amusement park. My son has since calmed down; he is old enough now to appreciate the magic of Santa Claus through his baby sister’s eyes and he has fun with it. But even so, we are careful to put Santa Claus in the proper perspective; he is just a fun part of Christmas–not the reason. We do not go to elaborate extremes to make his presence more real, just some cookies and milk left out on Christmas Eve. I do take my daughter to see Santa at the mall, but I don’t think she really cares one way or the other; I do it because I am competitive. See, there is a very popular Santa at the high-end mall here in Atlanta; he has a real white beard and longish white hair and is great with the kids. The wait to see him used to be hours long, but a few years ago they implemented an online appointment system. Great idea, but the appointments were booked immediately and I could never get a slot. It became an (obsessive) goal of mine to secure a space to see this Santa! Now, for the second year in a row I have been one of the lucky (or crazy) people online the day the appointments open and scored a time to see Santa. Next I emailed the neighbors to gloat.

I’m certain that I only have a couple more years left for my daughter to sit on Santa’s lap. An inquisitive child, she is already asking too many questions. Maybe I can tell her that Santa is like the CIA and only operates on a “need to know” basis. Do you think that will buy me a few more years? This is my last child and I want to keep the magic alive! I want her to believe!

What about you? Santa Claus: do you or don’t you? Discuss.

I love to bake during Christmastime! I don’t bake sweets any other time of the year because my sweet-toothed daughter and husband don’t need any encouragement, but I indulge them during the holiday season. Usually my daughter helps, so we get to spend time together and the results are delicious.

We like to leave cookies for Santa Claus that we have decorated ourselves. Sometimes we make gingerbread men and sometimes we make butter cookies. I know your temptation is to buy the roll of cookie dough at the grocery store, because you’re thinking, “The fun is in decorating, who cares about the taste. Besides, those refrigerator cookies taste pretty good!” Those refrigerator cookies don’t taste too bad, but quality matters. Do you really know what’s in that cookie dough? This recipe is not hard at all and the cookies are delicious. Make the dough a day ahead and then when it’s time to bake and decorate, it’s just as easy as store-bought dough. I’m sure Santa will appreciate the extra effort.

The Best Christmas Cookie Cutter Recipe

These Gingerbread and Lemon Sandwich Cookies are fancier than the butter cookies and they make perfect gifts. I made these cookies last year for my daughter’s teachers. I think these are the best cookies that I have ever made; they are divine! I’m making them again this year for sure.

Paris in December? Isn’t Paris a spring and summer destination? Well yes it is, but I can now tell you that it is a great winter vacation as well. And even though we were in Paris for Le Web, a tech conference, many tourists visit Paris in December. While it wasn’t as crowded as it was during our summer visit, I was not alone during my visits to museums, churches and other Paris sites. Many Germans, Italians, Japanese and French people were on holiday in Paris (I didn’t see many Americans). Despite the cold, rainy weather that Paris has this time of year, it’s a beautiful place to visit in December because the entire city is decorated for Christmas.

Big department store, tiny boutiques, restaurants, cafés, churches, squares and entire streets–they are all decorated for Christmas! I was giddy with joy every time I stepped outside our apartment door because I love Christmas decorations. Best of all were the Christmas huts selling gifts, sweets, food and my husband’s favorite of all, vin chaud (hot wine). The Champs-Elysées had the most huts to stroll–blocks and blocks. Christmas music was playing over the loud speakers, traditional songs we know, but in French. We strolled down the Champs during the day and came back at night to see the lights. There were also Christmas huts elsewhere in the city; the metro stop near our apartment was very festive as was the area surrounding Sacre Coeur.

Galeries Lafayette has a “rock and roll Christmas” theme this year. The holiday windows are best seen in this video that I shot with my iPhone. It’s quite an event to come view the windows; it was packed with both adults and children.

I have looked for many years, but most of the nativity scenes that I have found were not quite right. Either they were too big or too crafty-looking or just not my style. I mean Jesus is my style, but if possible I wanted the nativity scene to match my house and decor. This year I found something I like at Pier 1 Imports. Not quite a whole nativity scene, but the major players are there.

It’s pretty tall; Joseph stands at about 16 inches, but it doesn’t take up much room. I have it on the fireplace mantle. I like that it is colorful, sparkly, modern and abstract. There are no facial features, but none are needed; we know who they are.

They are, of course, the reason that we celebrate Christmas at all.

My daughter handed me this letter the other day and asked me to mail it to Santa Claus. She won’t go see him and sit on his lap anymore, but she’s writing a letter nevertheless. I think she wants to make sure to cover all her bases. I love the blanket request for a “surprise” and how thoughtful she is to include her puppy. Notice that baby Jesus in the letter too; she knows what Christmas is all about. In her mind, Santa and Jesus are not in conflict.

I wrote the blog post below 2 years ago and reposted last year. I think that I will repost every year because I have new readers and I’m so interested in the comments. So, what happens in your house? Santa Claus: do you or don’t you? Discuss.

*******************************

My daughter wanted to make cookies for all of her teachers (her 2 primary teachers as well as art, music, P.E. and science teachers). A daunting task, but I wanted to foster her giving spirit, so last night that’s just what we did. I was going to share this recipe next week, during the week of Christmas, but I made the mistake of posting this photo on my personal Facebook page last night:

All my friends made the same comment: “Share the recipe!”

I don’t blame them; I took that photo with my iPhone and the cookies still look incredible. And let me tell you, the cookies taste as incredible as they look. Crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside and full of flavor, dare I say this is one of the best cookies that I have EVER tasted. It only revivals the Key Lime cookie over at The Cookie Studio in Atlanta.

So, if I want my friends to speak to me again, I figured that I had better post the recipe sooner rather than later.

I found this recipe in the December issue of O, The Oprah Magazine and wanted to make these cookies because they looked unusual and gift-worthy. The magazine recipe didn’t have large-batch instructions like this online version (I wish it did, but it was a good math lesson for my daughter), so we just doubled the recipe. I was able to make 41 fairly large sandwiches and had just enough filling, spreading it not too thin or thick. I could have made a few more sandwiches if I had shaped the log better; there were cookie casualties that didn’t make it as sandwiches, but made it into our mouth. I was nervous about the shape of the cookies because my log of dough was a misshapen mess, but the shape evened out while baking and as you see in the photo above, the cookies look beautiful.

We made the dough–the hardest part of the recipe–the night before, so slicing, sugaring and baking the cookies was easy and fun. The frosting filling was easy to make (except zesting-oh, how I hate to zest); just be sure to beat the ingredients until it’s nice and thick. Read through the recipe first and see that the butter is divided; some of it is used for the dough and some of it is used for the frosting. Don’t soften it all at once if you are making the dough on another day (I made that mistake). I used about 3 drops of yellow food coloring, just enough to give the frosting a very soft lemon tint.

from O, The Oprah Magazine

Servings: Makes about 30 (large batch: 90)

Ingredients

2 cups and 2 Tbsp. all-purpose flour (large batch: 6 cups plus 6 Tbsp.)

2 tsp. baking soda (large batch: 6 tsp.)

2 tsp. ground cinnamon (large batch: 6 tsp.)

2 tsp. ground ginger (large batch: 6 tsp.)

1 tsp. ground allspice (large batch: 3 tsp.)

1 tsp. ground cloves (large batch: 3 tsp.)

1/2 tsp. fine salt (large batch: 1 1/2 tsp.)

18 Tbsp. (2 1/4 sticks) butter , divided, at room temperature (large batch: 54 Tbsp. or 6 sticks plus 6 Tbsp.)

1 cup granulated sugar , divided (large batch: 3 cups)

1 egg (large batch: 3 eggs)

1 Tbsp. vanilla extract (large batch: 3 Tbsp.)

1/4 cup unsulphured molasses (large batch: 3/4 cup)

2 cups confectioners’ sugar , sifted (large batch: 6 cups)

2 Tbsp. lemon juice (large batch: 6 Tbsp.)

2 tsp. zest from 1 lemon (use same lemon as for juice; large batch: use two lemons to extract 6 tsp. of zest)

6 to 8 drops yellow food coloring (optional; large batch: 18 to 24 drops)

Directions

Active time: 1 hour

Total time: 3 hours

In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, allspice, cloves, and salt; set aside. In a second large bowl, beat 12 tablespoons butter and 3/4 cup granulated sugar with an electric mixer on low speed until pale and fluffy, 1 to 2 minutes. Add egg, vanilla, and molasses, beating well after each addition. Add flour mixture and beat until smooth. Divide dough between 2 large sheets of parchment paper and roll up snugly, twisting the ends like a candy wrapper, to make two 8-inch logs. Refrigerate until firm, about 2 hours.

Preheat oven to 350°. Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper; set aside. Place remaining 1/4 cup granulated sugar in a shallow dish. Cut dough logs into 1/4-inch-thick slices. Dip the top of each in sugar and transfer to prepared baking sheets, spacing about 1 inch apart. Bake until just firm around the edges, about 10 minutes; let cool completely on a rack.

In a large bowl, beat remaining 6 tablespoons butter, confectioners’ sugar, lemon juice and zest, and food coloring (if using) with an electric mixer until fluffy, about 2 minutes. To assemble sandwiches, spread frosting onto half the cookies, then top with remaining cookies.

Note: Make the dough a day or two ahead when it suits your schedule, then cut and bake the cookies later when you have a free moment.

they were delicious even without the lemon filling

Girly spreading the lemon frosting

In the Oprah magazine, the cookies were tied up with parchment paper and string. I wanted something a bit more sturdy since my daughter would be distributing the cookies herself. The Container Store was a treasure trove of cookie containers. I bought small blue boxes (non-holiday specific and also my daughter’s favorite color), some decorative waxed paper and snowball trim. My daughter made personalized cards for all the teachers. We were able to fit about 4 cookies in each box, which left us with a few for ourselves and a friend’s birthday present. Already the kids are asking if we are going to make more this holiday season.

As my friend Darcie has so eloquently commented today on my last blog post,”tap, tap, is this thing on?” Her funny way of saying that I have been MIA on my blog. And she’s absolutely right…I disappeared on December 16th and just now got my house and mind cleared enough to blog again. Christmas, while my favorite holiday, takes a lot out of me and frankly I don’t think that I have sat down long enough to blog until now. My daughter is actually home sick, but DVR recordings of Spongebob Squarepants will keep her occupied long enough for me to write.

I know everyone is doing “happy new year” posts, but before I get to the new year I have to make sure Christmas is over and it’s still lingering in my house. I am still finding bits and pieces of Christmas lying around the house that I’ve forgotten to put away. The Christmas tree is still on the curb. A few toys are still out because they haven’t found a home yet. And the pine needle, oh the pine needles! I’m sure that I’ll be finding pine needles until at least Easter.

Everyone in my house had a good Christmas because my kids mostly care about spending time together and we did plenty of that. Christmas Eve was our big celebration because we traveled to my aunt’s house on Christmas Day; I cooked a big dinner and we decorated cookies and a gingerbread house like we do every year.

My favorite memory from Christmas morning was that my daughter wanted the family to open the gifts that she had made for us in sewing class–before she opened the gifts that Santa had left her. She was more excited to give than receive! That was really sweet and special. My son too was excited for us to open his gifts as he went shopping all alone with his own money and was very proud of what he picked out. He did a great job getting just the right present for everyone. The kids got everything that they wanted for Christmas and even though we don’t normally exchange gifts, my husband surprised me with a new pair of my favorite jeans (he said since I worked my butt off making Christmas special for the family, he bought something for my butt ).

He also did something funny: he bought me this card along with my gift. The inside says “that would be nuts.” When I got it I thought, um, okay, weird/inappropriate card to give your wife, but I didn’t want to seem ungrateful so I didn’t say anything and displayed it on our dresser. A few days later my husband came to me to apologize because he finally noticed how crass the card really was. When he picked it out, he thought it was funny because we always have squirrels in our attic wrecking havoc…he didn’t notice the, uh, enhanced anatomy on the squirrel. My son and I had a good laugh at his mistake and my daughter kept asking, “what’s so funny?”

Something else my husband did was not so funny, but really annoying. We had decided as a family to treat ourselves to an after-Christmas gift, a panini press. We had seen the one we wanted in Williams-Sonoma and went to the mall specifically for that purpose, to buy the Breville Ikon Panini Press; isn’t it lovely?

However, while in the store my husband tweeted out a question about what brand of panini press to buy and he got a response from a few people to get a George Forman Grill instead. Somehow he talked me into it. I know; what was I thinking? I won’t go into the arguing that ensued, but it turned out to be a big mistake and you know I let him know it! I ended up going back to Williams-Sonoma the next day and getting the panini press that we were originally supposed to buy. Peace was once again restored in our household and we have been making gloriously yummy paninis ever since.

Oh, but that peace was disrupted by a simple family game of Monopoly. I knew better, I really did, than to play Monopoly with my husband. We’re all competitive in this family, but something comes over my husband particularly when he is playing Monopoly that only can be described as manic. He loses all sense of decorum and tries to win at all costs. No life is spared. I know this because no game of Monopoly that I have ever played with him has gone well or can even be described as being fun; torture is more like it. This is how bad it gets: before we got married we played Monopoly and he was as tyrannical as he usually is, but I won that game. Slaughtered him, is more like it. I never wanted him to forget that defeat, so I wrote it on the top of the Monopoly box. We have bought many new games over the years, but I cut out the box top and always transfer it to the newest game. My son read the box top aloud before our latest game:

On May 7, 1993 Sherrelle and James played. In the beginning James talked much “yang” and bought up all the properties except the yellow and green (he even owned Boardwalk). However, Sherrelle had all the $ and all the railroads and utilities. That was James’ downfall because he never passed “Go” and always land on railroads ($200 each time)! Slowly he had to sell all of his many properties. By this time Sherrelle had bought 3 hotels on her yellow property and the climax (and end) of the game came when James landed on a hotel property–he then owed Sherrelle $1150! He was broke and Sherrelle won (he still owes her $680)! Sherrelle also left the game with $5,700 in cash, property and hotels. What a victory! James called himself the “Monopoly King”, but who’s ruling now?? The rightful ruler, now and always, is SHERRELLE. No matter what happens in future games, this will always go down in history as the night that Sherrelle let James know who was BOSS!!!

I don’t think my husband as ever forgotten that defeat and won’t rest until he reclaims his “Monopoly King” crown. Needless to say, “family game night” didn’t end well….blood was shed, tears were spilled, voices were raised (okay, not blood, but the rest is true). The game is retired to the top shelf of our laundry room and if we are smart, it will never be taken down again. I think we will be safer playing Candyland or Hi Ho Cheerio…..maybe.

So there you have the highlights of my holiday season. And we look so normal, don’t we?

Christmas is next week! It seems like it came so fast this year, but I am mostly ready. I still have to decide what we are eating on Christmas Eve. I am leaning towards a traditional dinner–which is very untraditional for me–of fried turkey, macaroni and cheese and some kind of vegetable. Of course I will bake a cake or two, decorate Christmas cookies, and maybe try Darcie’s Toffee Oatmeal Fudge Bars. A Spiced Kettlecorn recipe over at Goop.com looks great to eat while watching holiday movies.

I FINALLY tracked down ornaments for my family; they were tough this year! My daughter changed her ornament from a sewing machine (impossible to find) to an artist palette because she loves art.

My son wanted an ornament to represent The Sound of Music since he was in a musical theater production this year and I was able to find an ornament of the Austrian flag. I found both of these ornaments at Bronners.com.

My husband wanted an ornament to show his love of music and DJing from his computer on Friday nights; after much searching I found vintage record ornaments on Uncommongoods.com. These are real records re-purposed into ornaments.

And of course we couldn’t forget about Chili Dawg; adding him to our family was a major part of 2009. Judy over at Paws & Claws makes the best pet ornaments that I have ever seen. When she didn’t have a cockapoo ornament the color of Chili Dawg, she made one; we couldn’t be happier because it looks just like him.

The gifts are bought and wrapped. Santa brings the big gifts, but the kids do get a few gifts from us. I am absolutely stunned that Chili Dawg has not bothered the Christmas tree other than drinking the water, but I am not going to tempt him by putting gifts under the tree. I KNOW that will be a bad idea as he has never seen paper that he doesn’t want to rip to shreds! So this year we are putting the gifts on top of the TV cabinet; I made it look decorative so it’s not too weird. As you can see, the wrapping paper and bows match the silver, white and aqua color theme for this year.

Besides our kids, we just buy gifts for our nephew. I don’t think my husband and I have exchanged gifts very much since we’ve had kids. One reason is that providing Christmas for our kids takes all the money and the other is that my husband is so hard to shop for because he buys whatever he wants for himself all year long (mostly electronic/technology stuff). There is nothing left to buy him! As for me, there is ALWAYS something to buy, but I’ve learned to just treat myself when I can. Usually I wait until this time of year because the sales are good and special merchandise is available. Like beauty products: the L’Occitane Hand Creme Trio is a good deal (normally $10 a piece, the trio is sold for $25) as is the Lovely Lip Gloss Coffret from Nars ($49 for 8 lip gloss colors that would normally be soooo much more; Nars is not cheap). I had to give myself these gifts of beauty; I deserve to have soft hands and shiny lips.

Ever since I got my new Funkdivagirl.com business cards, I have been looking for a cute business card holder. I emphasize cute because plain black or brown leather are easy to find–cute ones are not. Early one day to meet my friend for a bit of holiday shopping and lunch at Neiman Marcus, I wandered into the Kate Spade store. I had been in there before and found nothing, but I figured with the holiday season they might have in new merchandise and I was correct. They didn’t have the color I wanted, my signature pink, but I was able to order it online (with free shipping) and it arrived nicely wrapped; a perfect gift to me, from me.

I love this time of year. I have plans to get my hair, eyebrows and nails done later this week and I’m excited for our pre-Christmas get-away with friends. I plan to enjoy it all because it will be over way too soon.

On the 12th day of Christmas my true love gave to me:

…….family time. So by today I’ve blogged for 12 straight days about Christmas and it’s been great. Now I’m in the home stretch; there is one week until my kids get out of school and I’ve got presents to wrap, cards to mail and meals to plan. I really try to do all my shopping and most Christmas preparations before my kids get out of school so that I am able to spend time with them and just have fun.

Besides baking cookies and playing games like Clue and Monopoly, we love to watch holiday movies next to the fireplace while drinking hot cocoa. A Christmas Story, Miracle on 34th Street, Christmas With the Kranks, and The Santa Claus are some of our favorite movies. But I think my absolute favorite holiday movie is Elf. Will Ferrell is HILARIOUS as Buddy the Elf! If you’re never seen this movie you missing a wonderful opportunity to laugh out loud. And who doesn’t like to laugh? Ho Ho Ho!

What is your favorite holiday movie? How do you like to spend family time during the holidays?

On the 11th day of Christmas my true love gave to me:

…….a doll that looks like me. Christmas: a time for showering the little people in our lives with toys and all that their hearts desire. This can give adults with so much joy, but it can also produce gut-wretching angst when you can’t find a doll for your little brown girl that looks like her.

*Most of my posts for this series of The 12 Days of Christmas have been fun and light-hearted, but I have been meaning to talk about this subject for awhile and it is something that many people struggle with this time of the year. Roll with it, think about it and please add your two cents in the comments.

A couple of months ago–well before the holiday season–emails were flying on the Mocha Moms listserv about Addy, an American Girl doll. If you don’t know about American Girl dolls, let me school you as I just entered this world last year when my daughter asked for an American Girl doll for Christmas. American Girl historical dolls are based on historical fictional book characters; each doll comes with a set of books that highlights a particular segment of American history. So I had to check out all the dolls and surprise, surprise there is only one African American historical doll, Addy.

And Addy is a slave.

Of course.

This is what the Mocha Moms were emailing about: why does Addy have to be a slave? Is that the ONLY part of African American history worth telling? Oh, and when they saw Addy’s doll, Ida Bean (although I’m sure she’s historically accurate), Lord, the emails were flying fast and furious.

To be fair, Addy is escaping slavery and her story is a courageous and compelling one; all the American Girl stories show how the characters display bravery and tenacity often in the face of the most trying times in American History. So, they are good books and the principles of the American Girl company are sound. Let me be clear: I like the American Girl company and support their mission and products both philosophical and financially. They also make modern-day “Just Like You” dolls that come in several shades of brown with various hair textures, so the lack of brown dolls in general is not in question; the rift is with the historical dolls.

So again we (“we” being me, my Mocha Moms chapter and I’m certain many African American mothers everywhere) ask: is slavery the only story that we have to tell about the African diaspora in America? It’s not that slavery isn’t a story worth telling, it’s the fact that we are limited to just one story. There is so much more.

What about the Harlem Renaissance? Besides great stories about the art, music and literature of that time period, that doll would have some fly clothes for sure. And what about the ’60s or ’70s? There is a doll now, Julie, who is sort of a hippy girl living in Berkley California; couldn’t they at least make an African American friend for Julie who wears a dashiki? That’s what I’m talking about!

I was not opposed to the Addy doll, but my daughter was not interested in her. So here was the dilemma: do I let her ask Santa for a white doll? Well, that’s always the question for African American parents whether it’s American Girl, Barbie or Disney Princesses dolls; are we going to let our daughters play with dolls that don’t look like them?

Of the people I know, for most the answer is a resounding NO. I too feel that way, but my daughter does have many of the Disney Princesses, who up until Princess Tiana (bless her!), were mostly white (Jasmine is Arabian and Mulan is Asian). I justified buying those dolls because they were “real people.” Her Cheetah Girls dolls are Latina, African American, mixed race and white, so they’re okay. And I think she also has a couple of random white Barbies; I don’t know how they got in there. So, while my daughter doesn’t exclusively own dolls of color, that is my strong preference.

She just got the new So In Style Barbies, which I love and think were long over-due, but whew!–those dolls have been controversial and they just hit the market. The articles in Jezebel.com, Essence.com, and The Wall Street Journal.com show what a hot topic this is for the African American community; liking the Barbies or not is the main thread, but that we care immensely about the images that are reflective of our daughters.

Why? Why do I prefer for my daughter to play with dolls of color? After all, she has a mixed race background so it shouldn’t matter, right? Wrong. No matter what her background, she is a brown girl and everything in the world is telling her that she is marginal. Including the toy industry. It is up to my husband and me to tell her that she is beautiful and worthy; one of the many ways we can do that is by providing her with playthings that reflect her image and consequently boost her self-esteem.

Back to the American Girl doll dilemma last Christmas: what doll did Santa bring? After admittedly a few strong suggestions from me, she asked for and got Josefina, a hispanic doll. A compromise: not African American, but still of color. I could get with that. Both she and I love the Josefina doll; she has a rich culture which makes for good stories and beautiful clothes.

This Christmas she asked for another American Girl doll and again I subtly steered her towards dolls of color, either Kaya, a Native American Indian or Sonali, a modern-day doll who is the friend of a white doll, Chrissa. I’m not sure of Sonali’s heritage, but she’s brown-skinned. I’ll take it.

It is true that the toy industry has come a long way from when I was little when dolls of color were few and came in one very dark shade of brown, but they still have a long way to go. As evidenced by the throngs of African American parents I see in the American Girl Store and the Princess Tiana dolls flying off the shelves, we are responding to the increase in diversity. We have money and will spend it if given the chance. Just give us the chance.

……churros. Usually a treat that you only get at a fair, right? Well, they are surprisingly easy to make at home. A few years ago I discovered this recipe in Martha Stewart Living magazine and made it one Christmas for my family and they loved it. No, churros aren’t a traditional holiday treat, but they are so yummy when paired with hot chocolate and a roaring fire on a cold winter night.

Most of the ingredients you probably have on hand already in your pantry, but you might not have the tools. Be sure to get a pastry bag with a large star tip and a deep-fry thermometer before you begin.

Martha, of course, eats her churros with homemade hot chocolate, but I have found that both Ghirardelli Premium Hot Cocoa and Williams-Sonoma Hot Chocolate are delicious and rich. I have the Williams-Sonoma Hot Chocolate Pot and now making hot chocolate is a breeze; you just pour the milk in the pot (no water! sacrilege!), heat it in the microwave, add the chocolate, insert the wand and “froth to perfection” as they say in the directions. Then I top it with marshmallows and whipped cream. A dusting of cinnamon or a cinnamon stick adds a little spice and decorative flair. Enjoy!

On the 9th day of Christmas my true love gave to me:

……pajamas. Several years ago when my son was small we started the tradition of buying new pajamas to wear on Christmas Eve. Really, it was born out of vanity because I wanted everyone to look cute on Christmas morning for photos. Everyone in my family loves this tradition and looks forward to their new pajamas, which we aren’t allowed to wear until Christmas Eve. I think that it would be so cute if we all had matching pajamas from The Company Store, but I just don’t plan far enough in advance. You would think ordering pajamas mid-November would be enough time, but no, they are all sold out by then. And I just can’t get my head around planning for Christmas in early October.

But this year we managed to match gender at least, the boys have the same pajamas as do my daughter and I. The girls were easy; PJ Savage has several styles for big people and little people. We got cupcake flannel pajamas at Nordstrom; bam-boom, in and out, easy peasy. The boys?….not so much. We went to Belk, (which has a great men’s department at Phipps Plaza; I can’t vouch for any other Belk) and there was a sea of pajamas–so many choices that they couldn’t decide. And it didn’t help that there was a flat screen TV showing a football game. It took forever to get out there, but finally they decided on a Ralph Lauren thermal top and cotton pajama bottoms.

We broke tradition this year and put the pajamas on last week to take our Christmas photo, but afterwards they went back in the drawers until Christmas Eve. Usually we put them on late night, after everyone leaves our house, but I think that I will have a pajama party this year and ask everyone coming over to wear pajamas. That sounds like fun!

“Jingle bells, Batman smells, Robin laid an egg. The Batmobile lost its wheel and the Joker got away.” Happily my taste in Christmas music as evolved. Because on the 8th day of Christmas my true love gave to me:

……Christmas music. The other day I got a frantic text from one of friends because she couldn’t find the Christmas cd that I had given her a few years ago. She needed that cd and she needed it NOW. Her kids were asking for it, she was missing it and the whole family needed it to get in the Christmas spirit. The cd that she is referring to is called “Sherrelle’s Christmas Spirit”, a compilation that I made several years ago of my favorite Christmas songs. Lucky for her the songs are now in my iTunes library and I just burned another cd for her. Lucky for you that I am listing them here so that you can have my Christmas spirit also.

Since last Christmas, when I first blogged about this cd, I’ve added two more songs: Last Christmas by George Michael (the song is catchy, just ignore the hideous 80′s fashions in the video) and Baby, It’s Cold Outside by Lou Rawls & Dianne Reeves (this is the best version of the song; trust me).

Pandora–love Pandora!–makes listening to Christmas music all day and night a breeze, but sometimes between Perry Como and the obscure country Christmas songs, I wind up hitting “thumbs down” too much. That’s when I put on my Christmas playlist and BAM!–I’m instantly in the Christmas spirit.

What about you: what’s your favorite Christmas song? What song instantly puts you in a jolly mood?

On the 7th day of Christmas my true love gave to me:

……a Christmas tree. It seems like it’s not really Christmastime until we have the Christmas tree up and decorated. In the past we have waited until mid-December to get our tree, but found that sometimes the best trees are gone by then, so now if we are in town we try to get it Thanksgiving weekend. Oh, and I refuse to get an artificial tree! Growing up we had both real and artificial trees (I remember a very groovy silver tree when I was very little), but I always liked the real trees better. I even like the ritual of picking out the tree. When we lived in New Jersey we always got our trees from a family-owned operation; they didn’t have the least expensive trees, but they were the best quality and I liked supporting a family business. One year money was tight and we got a tree from one of those grocery store lots where every tree is $25; by the end of December there weren’t any needles left on the tree. We never did that again! Here’s my husband with the tree we bought this year:

As everyone knows who puts up a Christmas tree, each year we forget how much work is involved; somehow we think that we will be able to buy the tree, set it up, string the lights and decorate it all on the same day. Wrong! It is a multi-day process, at least in my house. The first day we got the tree, wrested it into the house and put it in the water stand; that took about 2 hours. I begged and pleaded my husband to put on the lights while I decorated the rest of the house. But first we had to bring up all the decorations from the garage; that took an hour. Luckily I had on my Ma-Gyver hat last year while packing everything away and the boxes were labeled, so I didn’t have to unpack every box to get what I needed. Five years ago we decided to decorate with a new color scheme each year, so I have many boxes of decorations. Packing them according to color was the smartest thing I did. This year our color scheme is aqua blue, silver and white. I had the house decorated a week before the tree:

It took two weekends for us to finish the tree (and by “us” I mean “me”; my husband was working and the kids started playing with a NY Giants football ornament and abandoned the tree decorating), but it was finally done. Here’s the finished tree:

As you can see, the aqua blue, silver and white really doesn’t dominate the tree because in the 16 years that we have been married, we have accumulated many personal ornaments. Every year each family member chooses a personal ornament either based on something that happened to them that year or simply an ornament that they like. And we also try to get an ornament whenever we vacation in a new place; this year we bought an ornament in New Mexico that reminds us of our trip to Jane Fonda’s ranch.

I bought my ornament for this year; I love peace signs and it’s also representative of my blog, a big part of my life in 2009. I already have a disco ball (another favorite and Funkidivagirl.com icon).

But I’m having the toughest time finding ornaments for my family this year! They are requesting a sewing machine (my daughter is learning how to sew), Swiss mountains (my son was in a production of The Sound of Music) and DJ equipment (my husband live-streams/DJs from his computer most Friday nights). Can they be any more difficult? If you have any leads on where I can buy these ornaments, please let me know; I have looked everywhere in real life and online and can’t find anything.

What about you: do you have any traditions around decorating your house for Christmas?

(Side note: I hope that you realize that I am using “my true love gave to me” because of the song; through these posts I am showing you what I love about Christmas. My true love can’t cook at all and certainly can’t make a Red Velvet Cake to save his life. I just wanted to make that clear. Carry on.)

Yum! I love Red Velvet Cake! I grew up eating Red Velvet Cake during the holidays because my family is from The South, but I was surprised to learn that not everyone in The North where I grew up has had that delicious pleasure. Now I think it is more popular everywhere, due in part I’m sure to celebrity chefs like Paula Deen. Here in Atlanta where I currently live Red Velvet Cake is so popular that you can buy it anytime of the year in the local supermarket. To be sure my family does eat our share of Red Velvet Cake and cupcakes throughout the year (our review was posted in the summer), but to me it is still a holiday cake. We are blessed to have great southern bakeries near us that make fantastic cakes, but still none is as good as my Aunt Vernelda’s recipe. I don’t know why, but the baking gene in my family skipped my mother, although she’s a good cook. My grandmother and all my aunts are good bakers, but the family knows that any cake at my mother’s house is going to come from a box or the grocery store. Maybe it is because of my Betty Crocker childhood that I took an interest in baking as an adult and enjoy making cakes from scratch. Each Christmas I either make a Lemon Pound Cake (B. Smith’s recipe), my friend Cheryl’s Secret Almond Pound Cake or my Aunt’s Red Velvet Cake.

If you try to make this recipe, don’t let the cake get too dry; Red Velvet Cake has to be moist to be good. The crunchy pseudo-hippy in me cringes at the red food coloring in this recipe. If you have an alternative way to use a natural ingredient to make the cake red without altering the flavor, please let me know

RED VELVET CAKE

Cake Ingredients:

2 1/2 cups flour

1 1/2 cups sugar

2 eggs

1 cup vegetable oil

1 cup buttermilk

1 teaspoon cocoa

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon vinegar

1 bottle red food coloring

Icing Ingredients:

1 box powered sugar

1 stick of butter at room temperature

1 stick of cream cheese at room temperature

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions for cake batter: Beat eggs and add sugar. Beat again. Alternate milk, flour and oil, beating in between. Add baking soda, cocoa, vinegar and food coloring. Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes. Insert a toothpick to see if it’s done (it should come out clean). Cool completely on wire racks before frosting.

Directions for icing: Beat butter, add sugar, add vanilla and cream cheese. Spread on a cool cake.

*This is a re-post; during Christmas 2008 this post garnered much discussion and I’m curious to hear what new readers have to say.

******************

Santa Claus: Do You or Don’t You?

Filed Under Christmas on December 5, 2008

Discuss.

On the 4th day of Christmas my true love gave to me:

……a Christmas vacation. For this blog post I’ve decided to participate in Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop and answer the prompt: Describe how you would celebrate the holidays if it was totally up to you and money was not a factor. I would take a vacation during Christmas.

I would celebrate Christmas at Disney World. Yes, yes, I know that I just got back, but I’ve never been there at Christmastime and I hear it’s very beautiful. Of course we would stay in the biggest suite available and have a decorated Christmas tree with our own personal ornaments flown in from home. The tree would be piled high with presents for everyone. After spending Christmas Eve in Magic Kingdom, we would come back to our suite, where warm cookies and hot cocoa would be waiting. Mickey, Minnie and all the Disney pals would join us for a Christmas sing-along before tucking us in bed. The next day–Christmas Day–after opening all of our gifts (of course everything that we’ve ever wanted), we’ll hop around to each theme park with a turbo Fast Pass and never stand in line. That night we would be honored guests in the SpectroMagic Parade. *Sigh.*

OR

I would recreate the scene in Home Alone in the Plaza Hotel. Remember when everyone ran downstairs on Christmas Day to see the huge tree spilling forth gifts? When we lived in New Jersey we used to go to the Plaza for tea and it’s such a beautiful hotel. Christmas in New York is so magical with the window displays, the tree at Rockafeller Center and carriage rides through Central Park. I’ve haven’t done that since moving to Atlanta 6 years ago and I miss it. I would do everything that I’ve done before–but this time stay in at the Plaza in Kevin’s Home Alone suite.

This is my son, age 4, at Rockafeller Center. It’s one of my favorite photos.

OR

My daughter doesn’t remember snow (since she was under 2 years old when we moved south). To someone who grew up in the mid-west (me), that’s a shame. I would love to give her a white Christmas by renting a luxurious house in a snowy place like Vermont or Colorado. Spending the days outside playing in the snow and the nights next to the roaring fire or in the hot tub would be so wonderful.

That is how I would like to celebrate Christmas. And really I could do any one of these things now on a lesser scale (if not the Kevin suite at the Plaza, then a Marriott will do), but my family never wants to spend Christmas away from home. They want to decorate gingerbread houses on Christmas Eve at their kitchen table. They want bake cookies in their stove. They want to roast marshmallows in their fireplace. They want to sleep in their beds and run down their stairs in the morning to see what Santa left under their tree. So for now I indulge them and do everything to make their Christmas special and memorable, just the way they like it.

Isn’t that what moms do? And of course I enjoy every minute of it.

What about you: how would you celebrate the holidays if it was totally up to you and money was not a factor?

…..Chili Dawg. Look at my puppy in his Santa hat; isn’t he too adorable?

As much work as it is having a puppy (and it’s a lot of work), it’s just as much fun. I love his combination of exuberance and innocence; looking at him makes me laugh and he is a joyous part of my life.

We’re really looking forward to spending our first Christmas with Chili. (Okay, the kids and are are excited; I can hear my husband now, “Stop! No! Argh! Someone put that dog away!” Chili’s antics frustrate him). I bought Chili a stocking and it’s ready to be filled with treats, toys and balls (his favorite). I was really worried about him bothering the Christmas tree because he can be really mischievous, but so far so good. He’s taken a drink a few times, but mostly he stays away. Now, it isn’t totally decorated yet, just the lights, so I do think that he will try to steal ornaments once they are on there. And putting presents under the tree unprotected is out of the question because he loves to tear up paper. I guess that I need to put a play pen around the tree or some kind of barrier; how ugly is that going to look?

What about you? If you ever had a puppy at Christmastime, how did you keep him away from the tree?

On the 2nd day of Christmas my true love gave to me:

….Christmas Cards. Do you send Christmas Cards? I do and I love sending them. I think that it’s nice to give and receive a piece of snail mail during the holiday season. I especially look forward to cards with family photos and I proudly display every one. After Christmas they go into a special photo album; I can look at the album and see how a family has grown over several years. But I have seen a decline in the number of Christmas cards that I have received over the last few years. Is it because people are cutting back on non-essential items? Or is it because it is easier (and free) to send holiday greetings electronically? Or perhaps people are still sending cards through the mail, but my family is just not that popular. That could be it.

I must admit though that every year for the past 5 years I have thought about going the electronic route. It seems that I communicate with everyone I know this way and now with Facebook it is even more so. Before the only way to see how much a family has grown and changed was through the exchange of annual Christmas cards, but now on Facebook I see photos of my friends’ family all the time and they see mine too. Wouldn’t sending a Christmas card be redundant? If we cut out this expense we could save at least $200 on cards and postage.

However, I talked it over with my family and they are all vehemently opposed to an electronic card and I’m glad. It’s nice that this Christmas tradition can remain a touchable, tangible thing in real life. NOW we just need to take a photo together and make the card–that is a the real chore. Gathering everyone to sit still, look at the camera and keep their eyes open is work. Smiles are a bonus; I’m just aiming for looking presentable. And this year we are adding the puppy to the photo too; I predict more chaos than usual because he doesn’t sit still very well. One year I am determined to send out a Christmas newsletter; my high school friend does this and I look forward to receiving her letter each year. (But now she is on Facebook and we read updates about the family all year long; I wonder if she is sending her letter this year? Hmmm.)

What about you; do you send Christmas cards in the mail? Are you thinking about sending them electronically this year? Why or Why not?
