That Pretty, Skinny-legged Black Girl: Whitney Houston

I met Whitney Houston once or twice.  I know her family, so it wasn’t a surprise when I met her, but it was still a thrill.  She was normal and down to earth, but I don’t think I said two words to her because she is after all, Whitney.

Like everyone else in the world, I thought she was a phenomenal singer, but more than anything I remember her as the skinny-legged, pretty black girl on the cover of Seventeen.   As a skinny black girl too, I didn’t see myself often represented on the cover of teen fashion magazines.  She was an inspiration.  Only much later did I connect the dots between the girl-model and the powerful voice.

I’m linking up with Mama Kat by answering the prompt: Share a Whitney Houston song that meant something to you.

This is a sweet memory b/c it reminds me of how much I looked at her this way too. Here I am this skinny black girl and maybe I can be something too. Not a singer, not even a model, but dammit, something. Because she looks like me and she’s done it. I look around me now and don’t see many girls my kids can emulate. Women, yes, but not necessarily more than one or two girls who might give them the belief beyond what I tell them about being able to achieve anything.

Arnebya, you are so right about that! Thank you for sharing.

Wow, crazy that you met Whitney! I love the cover of that Seventeen… matching sweater dresses… check! She is beautiful.

I vaguely remember that cover and at that time she wasn’t “Theee” Whitney Houston. She was a young black girl around my age that made me think I could be on the cover of a magazine. Even then, she was an inspiration.

She paved the way for so many women!! I just wish covers like that started coming out a whole lot earlier than Whitney’s era!
