*Today I am participating in Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop by answering the prompt: 5.) A snappy comeback! I actually wrote this post awhile back as a nostalgic memory for Kickin’ It Old School, but hey, it never gets old. It’s a classic; Yo mama is a snappy comeback appropriate for just about any situation. Wouldn’t you agree?

This actually happened almost a year ago, but it still cracks me up whenever I think about it.
We were at the W Hotel in Buckhead having a fancy dinner with our kids to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. In the course of normal dinner conversation my husband picked up his wine glass, smelled it, and decided that it smelled too dusty for him and asked for another glass. Now, I had been married to this man for 15 years at that point and had never seen him smell a glass before, but apparently he says that he does it all the time because dusty glasses are a pet peeve of his. I started making fun of him because I really think my husband is going to be a crazy old man; I mean some of his current behaviors point in that direction. I had the kids cracking up by painting a verbal picture of their dad sitting in a corner rocking chair smelling glasses, rocking madly and mumbling to himself.
My husband was not amused and just said, “Yo momma.”
Actually he frequently using this comeback to me when he can’t think of anything else to say and even says it to my son. My son responds with, “You know, you’re talking about your wife and she’s standing right there.”
Well, that night I had a comeback of my own. Out of the depths of my memory bank I pulled out a little ditty that I hadn’t said since I was about 9 years old living on the South Side of Chicago and recited it to my husband with requisite finger wagging and facial attitude.
Yo Momma,
Yo Daddy,
Yo greasy Granny,
Got a hole in her panties,
Got a big behind like Frankenstein,
Going beep-beep-beep down Sesame Street!
And then I started laughing uncontrollably.
My kids stared at me in shock and my husband tried to quiet me down, concerned about the other diners, but it took a long time for me to settle back into a Buckhead-like decorum. It was fun to throw my playground swagger around….I still got it!

It’s been almost a year since we first published our review of The Best Cupcakes in Atlanta and declared CamiCakes as the overall winner. Since then we have become frequent visitors; we buy CamiCakes for special events and also just because. Anytime is a good time for a cupcake, no special occasion needed!
During our last visit, we caught owner Andra Hall on a rare break from crafting cupcakes. She was happy to sit down and give us an update about her first year in Atlanta.
That’s it; I need a cupcake!

I don’t really eat red meat anymore. Partly because my body doesn’t like it and partly because I’ve become skeeved out about meat in general. And I definitely won’t eat a fast food burger; we’re going to LA soon and while the family can’t wait for In-N-Out Burger, I guess that I have to settle for fries and a milkshake.
But this not eating meat thing, it’s not a hard rule. Sometimes—rarely, but it happens—I want a burger. Not a turkey burger or black bean burger, but a BEEF burger. When that happens I make my own at home, with grass-fed, hormone-free beef. It lessens the skeevy factor, knowing that the cows were treated humanely and fed properly.
Until recently ordering a burger in a restaurant wasn’t even an option, but a new trend in Atlanta restaurants is serving what I call “clean meat.” Organic, grass-fed and sustainability are the new buzz words and I’m digging it.
In this vein, a new burger restaurant in Atlanta just opened, Farm Burger. I tried it and if I am going to indulge in beef, it’s going to be there. The meat was juicy, flavorful and tasted “clean.” No skeeviness.
I got one of the chalkboard specials, with goat cheese and peach chutney. Fancy. And delicious too.
Beef this good doesn’t come cheap. Burgers, fries and drinks for my family of 4 cost about $50. This is no fast food. But it’s good food and I’ll take healthiness over cheapness any day.
I’ll let my son tell you all about it. He’s featured monthly in the Atlanta INtown News What’s Good section; this month he wrote about Farm Burger. He’s the burger guy (remember this cover?), so he’s the one to give you the goods.

My family and I love to eat. In the spirit of the Food Network show by the same name, we’re going to share the best thing we ever ate and hope that you will tell us your favorites too.
This is my last post about my latest Disney Media Trip. I’ve written about Summer Nightastic, posted a video of Disney’s Main Street Electrical Parade, interviewed the Green Army Men from Toy Story 3 and showed you how I dressed for both work and play at Disney World. As you can see from my blog posts, my weekend was pretty amazing; Disney always makes sure that the media trips are full of magical touches. And we eat good on media trips with catered dinners and dessert buffets. It’s delicious, beautifully presented and there’s an open bar. We always love these dinners.
But still my family cannot leave Disney World without having the best Disney treat we ever ate: Dole Whip. There’s a debate among Dole Whip fans (there are legions of them out there!) if the treat is best in it’s purest form–just the ice cream–or as a float with pineapple juice. My family votes for the float. I’m telling you, there is nothing more refreshing on a hot day than a Dole Whip! Somehow we always seem to get ours right before the Move It! Shake It! Celebrate It! Street Party; we sit on the benches leading out of Adventureland and watch the people move it and shake it. Or watch the ducks(sometimes a better option).
Doesn’t that make your mouth water?
*Dole Whip fans, what’s your vote: ice cream only or float?

I have had the pleasure of attending a few media events at Disney World and while it is fun, make no mistake, there is also work involved. The days are long and the schedule is jam-packed. During a media day at Disney I could be in front of a photographer, interviewing or meeting Disney executives, lunching in a nice restaurant and riding a roller coaster. And don’t forget about the Florida heat!
All of these factors make dressing for a Disney media trip very tricky. Although Disney World is a casual place, I am not there as a tourist, and therefore I don’t think it is appropriate to dress like one. I need to dress appropriate, funki (cause that’s me) but also comfortable and cool. And of course I must look cute! There are cameras everywhere and I never know whose blog, newspaper article or newsreel on which I may appear.
My last trip was a little more relaxed because families were invited as well, but this presented the challenge of dressing for both media events and family fun in the same day. Here are the looks that I put together:
Day 1: I had a media event in the morning with several Disney employees about the Main Street Electrical Parade. This dress worked well for the occassion: it was breezy and cool, short enough to be fashionable, but not too short to be inappropriate and easy to dress up with accessories. For the media event I swapped the fabric belt for a wide black belt. While my sandals are flat and perfect for walking, they are a bit dressy and elevate the dress. The green color adds some funkiness (gotta put the funk in there somehow!). My tote bag is big enough to hold my wallet, lipgloss, sunglasses and necessary media equipment–iPhone, Flip cam, camera, notepad, agenda–as well as a pair of play shoes. I could have even put my iPad in there if needed.
Dress: from Dakota J’s, an Atlanta boutique
Shoes: Seychelles, from Sole, an Atlanta boutique shoe store
Belt: from Sage, an Atlanta boutique
Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs, from Nordstrom
After I met up with my family and the sun became to much to handle, I pulled my hair back, exchanged the wide belt for the fabric belt and switched the Seychelles sandals for my purple Keens sandals (ok, not the most fashionable shoes, but my feet needed a break; I think a pair of Fit Flops would have worked well too). Never underestimate a great pair of sunglasses to hide your tired eyes!
Sunglasses: Juicy Couture
For our evening dinner event I transformed back into Funkidiva Media Girl: wide belt, Seychelles sandals and loose hair.
Day 2: My family joined me for a media screening of Toy Story 3. Although I didn’t have to dress nicely, it was still a media event and somebody is always filming or photographing. After the movie we were scheduled to spend the day as a family in Hollywood Studios, so I dressed for fun, but still a few notches above my normal Disney World garb. I wore shorts (but not too short), a cute top and another pair of funki flat sandals. Again, once my feet grew tired and my face sweaty, I swapped the cute sandals for Keens and pulled my hair back. In the evening, right before the media dinner, I let my hair down and put on the cute sandals. Here I am about to ride Toy Story Mania. I am working; I swear!
Shorts: Lucky Brand
Shirt: Anthropologie
Shoes: Seychelles, from Sole, an Atlanta boutique shoe store
Day 3: I was working early in the morning and then flying back home. This was the big media event for Summer Nightastic; television and radio stations would be present. Since I would be interviewing several people and representing Funkidivagirl.com, I wanted to look nice, but casual. Here I am after the interviews and on my to the airport. I wore the purple Seychelles sandals while working, but in this photo I have on my Swarovski crystal Havaianas flip flops; my feet were done!
Dress: Lucky Brand
Bag: Oilily
On the next trip I have to pick up a few things at TrenD, a stylish boutique in Downtown Disney, because it’s always appropriate to wear Mickey at Disney World. With a pair of white jeans and strappy sandals, a crystal-studded blinging Mickey tee would look fresh and funki and just right–for work or play.
